{"id":3560,"date":"2019-08-07T23:27:24","date_gmt":"2019-08-07T19:27:24","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/blog.cudoo.com\/?p=3560"},"modified":"2022-10-12T15:07:15","modified_gmt":"2022-10-12T11:07:15","slug":"3560-2","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/cudoo.com\/blog\/3560-2\/","title":{"rendered":"Some Remarkable Purple Heart Medal Stories on this #PurpleHeartDay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Purple Heart, America&#8217;s Oldest Medal, is awarded to members of any of the United States Armed Forces who are wounded by an instrument of war, are killed in action or die of wounds received in action, according to the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.army.mil\/article\/81148\/5th_bcd_soldier_awarded_the_purple_heart_medal\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">U.S. Army<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>There&#8217;s estimated to be roughly 1.8 million recipients, 1.07 million of those were awarded during WWII.<\/p>\n<p>There are some amazing stories behind Purple Heart Medal recipient&#8217;s lives.<\/p>\n<h2>Marine Cpl. Jason Dunham<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/0K-NdbhtXJE?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"No Higher Honor: The Jason Dunham Story\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>In April of 2004, Dunham&#8217;s convoy came under attack.\u00a0 During this attack, Dunham engaged in hand to hand combat with a driver from a vehicle he had stopped. The driver of the car dropped a grenade and fled.<\/p>\n<p>Dunham immediately threw himself and his helmet over the grenade, in an effort to protect his men. Although Dunham did not die on the spot, he passed a few days later due to injuries from the grenade.<\/p>\n<p>It&#8217;s no wonder why Dunham has received so many <a href=\"https:\/\/en.wikipedia.org\/wiki\/Jason_Dunham\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">awards<\/a>;<\/p>\n<ul>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/thefallen.militarytimes.com\/marine-cpl-jason-l-dunham\/257227\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Medal of Honor<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Purple Heart<\/li>\n<li>Combat Action Ribbon<\/li>\n<li>Navy Meritorious Unit Commendation<\/li>\n<li>Marine Corps Good Conduct Medal<\/li>\n<li>Iraq Campaign Medal<\/li>\n<li><a href=\"https:\/\/www.navy.mil\/submit\/display.asp?story_id=12111\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Global War on Terrorism Service Medal<\/a><\/li>\n<li>Navy Sea Service Deployment Ribbon<\/li>\n<li>Sharpshooter Rifle Marksmanship Badge<\/li>\n<li>Expert Pistol Marksmanship Badge<\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<h2>Douglas Munro &#8211; Petty Officer First Class &#8211; United States Coast Guard<\/h2>\n<p><iframe loading=\"lazy\" width=\"720\" height=\"405\" src=\"https:\/\/www.youtube.com\/embed\/7RnEtu8bA8k?feature=oembed\" frameborder=\"0\" allow=\"accelerometer; autoplay; clipboard-write; encrypted-media; gyroscope; picture-in-picture\" allowfullscreen title=\"The Story of Douglas Munro, Guardian of Guadalcanal\"><\/iframe><\/p>\n<p>Munro&#8217;s heroic story begins with him and his team trying to free a group of Marines who were being held by the Japanese, says the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepurpleheart.com\/roll-of-honor\/profile\/?rID=11175fbc-ddda-44c8-b9cc-f2ecc9543bb7\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Purple Heart Hall of Honor<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>He commanded five boats of men to safety, all while being shot at by machine guns. He used his own boat as a shield for those who were being rescued.<\/p>\n<p>Later, Munro died during this mission but his impressive acts were remembered when he was awarded both the Purple Heart and Medal of Honor.<\/p>\n<h2>Beatrice Mary MacDonald &#8211; Army &#8211; Army Nurse Corps<\/h2>\n<p><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"irc_mi aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/upload.wikimedia.org\/wikipedia\/commons\/5\/51\/Purple_heart.jpg\" alt=\"Image result for Purple Heart\" width=\"172\" height=\"323\" data-iml=\"1565205171840\" \/><\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n<p>During World War I Ms. MacDonald was assigned to a hospital that was four miles behind enemy lines in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.thepurpleheart.com\/roll-of-honor\/profile\/?rID=836959b5-46de-47c1-b7d6-af1a14722071\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Belgium<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Eventually, MacDonald&#8217;s hospital was bombed by Germans. She was injured by shell fragmentation.<\/p>\n<p>Later, MacDonald lost her right eye.
