Many businesses have offices in the US and UK, with other headquarters, warehouses, factories, etc. in other countries. This has driven English to the forefront as the language of global businesses. There are also numerous countries that were under the British empire that retained English as one of their national languages or their only national language. There are over 6,000 languages in the world! Some of these are also becoming more prevalent.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">As the world evolves, more and more businesses are implementing policies to use English to make business communications easier and efficient. One can imagine there were many issues in the past and quite possibly even now, where clients or leaders within a business can\u2019t communicate with each other because of language barriers.<\/span><\/p>\n<h4><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Language: A Deal-Maker and Deal-Breaker\u00a0<\/span><\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">According to an article in the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/hbr.org\/2012\/05\/global-business-speaks-english\"><b><i>Harvard Business Review<\/i><\/b><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">, there are different reasons driving English to become the standard language in the corporate world. As an example, Rakuten\u2019s CEO heard of an incident where two French companies couldn\u2019t close a deal due to communication barriers. One company did not realize there would be employees from elsewhere that did not speak French. After this, in March 2010, Rakuten, a Japanese company, implemented a policy that English would become their language of the business.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<h4>why English as the global language?<\/h4>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">English is the most spoken language in the world! Over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.statista.com\/statistics\/266808\/the-most-spoken-languages-worldwide\/\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">1.4 billion people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> speak it. It makes sense then that this would be the chosen language of the corporate world.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">However, there are some other languages we should be aware of that are becoming popular as well. These include:\u00a0\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<ul>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">French\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Spanish\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Arabic<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Mandarin\u00a0<\/span><\/li>\n<li style=\"font-weight: 400;\" aria-level=\"2\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">Portuguese<\/span><\/li>\n<\/ul>\n<p><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">If you are in the business industry whether as a client or business owner, it might be beneficial to know one or more other languages. French is spoken by over <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/www.worlddata.info\/languages\/french.php#:~:text=A%20total%20of%20about%2097.6,are%20over%20300%20million%20speakers.\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">300 million people<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\"> in the world with 97.6 million of them speaking it as their native language. French is also one of the <\/span><a href=\"https:\/\/stillmed.olympic.org\/media\/Document%20Library\/OlympicOrg\/General\/EN-Olympic-Charter.pdf\"><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">official languages of the Olympics<\/span><\/a><span style=\"font-weight: 400;\">.
