Alsatian is a beautiful, crisply worded language perfect for such a picturesque country. In a region filled with vineyards, villages, and castles, this language is spoken widely by the people in Alsace, France. Due to its location on the border, the Alsace region has been heavily influenced by both German and French. This is very apparent in the Alsatian language.
The German influence on Alsatian is clear. Alsatian is a West Germanic language that belongs to the Alemannic group of languages. In Alsace, you’ll see many shop signs in German as the written language is mostly German at this point in time. Though heavily influenced by German, it’s French influence actually makes Swiss German the most closely related language to Alsatian.
