Pashto (also known as Pakhto, Pashtu, and Pushto) is part of the Indo-Iranian branch of the Indo-European language family. The language is primarily spoken in the east and south and has some presence in northern and western parts of Afghanistan and became the national language in 1936. Speakers of the language are known as Pashtuns. Different estimates show that Pashto is the mother tongue of 45–60% of the total population of Afghanistan.
The language is also spoken in Pakistan by 15% of the population, mainly in Khyber Pakhtunkhwa and Balochistan and parts of Iran. Pashto is influenced by the Persian language and has many loanwords from Urdu and due to the influence of Islam, the language has borrowed words from Arabic.
