Tagalog is the official language of the Philippines. Endemic to the nation, the Austronesian language has survived years of occupancy by several powers, most prominently Spain and the United States.
The language is spoken predominantly in the northern provinces of the Philippine Archipelago, particularly those encircling Manila. However, it is considered a second language throughout the country. Tagalog has several dialects in different areas of the nation.
Tagalog has proliferated throughout the world as a result of a large number of Filipino diaspora populations. The Philippines has a population of more than 100 million people, with another 10 million living abroad. Many facets of culture, including the Tagalog language, are brought with such populations.
College students take up Filipino in a classroom setting, some language lovers take it as a next milestone to achieve, and some learn Tagalog to communicate with a Filipino spouse, close relative, or beloved mate.
There are also certain cases where individuals of Filipino descent want to learn Tagalog because their parents didn’t teach them. So they find it as a golden opportunity to reconnect with their heritage.
The Tagalog grammar differs greatly from that of English. Tagalog has a variable word order, with a VSO (Verb-Subject-Object) and VOS structure (Verb-Object-Subject). Normally, while the verb is at the start of a sentence, the accompanying noun phrase could be placed flexibly in the sentence.
The various orders alter elements like emphasis. It is a difficult concept to grasp, especially for English speakers, where SVO form is the standard.
