The Quechua language is known by its speakers as Runa Simi or the language of the people. Quechua or Runa Simi was the general language or the lingua franca of the Inca Empire or Tawantinsuyo in Inca times!
Hiram Bringham, a famous explorer, had a Quechua speaking guide who asked the locals if there were any interesting cities, and they brought them to the famous Machu Picchu, one of the seven wonders of the world. Learn Quechua online and familiarize yourself with words and phrases from the language, and explore the fascinating history of the Inca Empire.
Why Should You Learn Quechua?
Learning Quechua provides an indigenous insight into South American history, society, culture, and language, enabling you to view the landmass from new perspectives. For instance, in English, we consider the past being in the past and the prospective to be in front. The order is reversed in Quechua.
These distinctions you find when you learn the Quechua language might force you to reconsider the viewpoints we often neglect and open our eyes to new thoughts.
Does Quechua Resemble Spanish?
It is estimated that Spanish and Quechua have a vocabulary similar to each other by about 30%. However, the two are significantly dissimilar in grammatical features. Suffixes are added to base root terms in Quechua to indicate meaning.
Thus, the root, suffix, and suffix could all be found in a single word.
Compared to Spanish- an analytical language with only one element of meaning per word, it is dramatically different. In contrast to Spanish, where the word order is typically subject-verb-object, Quechua has a free subject-object-verb structure.
Is Quechua a Dialect or A Language?
The word Quechua refers to a group of languages that existed for a long time, well before the Inca and the conquistadors.
Today, there are approximately 24 dialects, which are segregated into three classifications, namely- Northern, Central, and Southern Quechua. Northern Quechua is situated east of Quito, Ecuador’s capital; central Quechua is located in the Andes to the northeast of Lima, Peru; and southern Quechua runs from Ayacucho, Peru, to Sucre, Bolivia.
