Slovak is one of the West Slavic languages (like Polish, Sorbian, and Czech) and is the official language of Slovakia. With over 5.5 million speakers, Slovak has a complex relationship with Czech, as they were essentially one nation before the separation in 1993. Although still mutually intelligible, the Czech and Slovakian languages are drifting further away from each other.
Slovaks spoke a Slovakized version of the language, and today Slovak, or Slovakian as it is sometimes known, is deemed a language in its own right.
Difficulty Level: Contrary to popular belief, Slovak is not the hardest language to learn for English speakers, but having said that, it’s not the easiest either. According to the Foreign Services Institute, English speakers require approximately 44 weeks or 1100 hrs to reach proficiency levels.
