18 Sep Fijian Online Course – Level 1
Fijian (Na Vosa Vakaviti) is an Austronesian language of the Malayo-Polynesian family spoken in Fiji. The early missionaries who came to Fiji selected the Bau dialect or ‘Bauanas’, as the standard dialect for printing and communication, which soon became the standard of communication among the indigenous ‘iTaukei’.
Bauan was then adopted by the British administration for communication with the ‘iTaukei’, which over time, evolved into what is known today as Standard Fijian, including many English, Hindi and other Fijian dialectal contributions.
