A Brief About the Afrikaans Language

Afrikaans is a creole language with a West Germanic origin that is mostly spoken in South Africa, Namibia, and to a slightly lesser degree, Zambia, Botswana, and Zimbabwe.

It emerged from the Dutch dialect of Holland used by European (Dutch, French, and German) colonists in South Africa, where it eventually began to acquire distinctive traits throughout the eighteenth century. It is a sophisticated Creole tongue.

Even though Afrikaans has borrowed words from other languages, such as German and the Khoisan languages, approximately 90-95% of the Afrikaans lexicon has Dutch roots.

As a consequence, the two languages have a high level of mutual comprehension, particularly when written. It ranks third in the most spoken languages in South Africa, with seven million native speakers representing 13.5% of the population.

According to estimates, there are anywhere between 15-23 million native speakers of Afrikaans worldwide.

Of the 11 official South African languages, it has the broadest geographical and ethnic dispersion and is frequently spoken and recognized as a second or third language.
