Latin provides the root words for all of the modern sciences, and half of English vocabulary is made up of latin words or latin roots. Two very good reasons to learn Latin for starters! Add to that the fact is also the language of law, politics, logic, and theology, (think of pro bono, veto, referendum), and you now have enough reasons to counteract the argument of, “But isn’t Latin a dead language?”
A knowledge of Latin, and its universal grammatical rules, makes a great grounding for any other language you want to learn. A basic knowledge of Latin cuts down the labor and pains of learning almost any other language.
Add to that that it is very cool to be be able to join in with all those latin references thrown about, such as caveat emptor (buyer beware), it’s definitely time to carpe diem (seize the day) and get some Latin basics!
