Introduction: Serbian is a South Slavic language spoken by about 11 million people in the world. It’s the official language of Serbia, spoken by 95% of the population, and the main one used in this country of stunning national parks and mountains. Virtually identical to Croatian, Serbian is written in the Cyrillic (or Russian) alphabet, and Croatian uses Roman letters. Eight countries surround Serbia, some of which were also part of the former Yugoslavia, making it a landlocked country, with plenty of influence from its past as part of the Ottoman Empire, The Austro-Hungarian Empire, and Yugoslavia, before achieving independence in 2006.

Did you know? One of Serbia’s famous spots is on the slopes of Mount Radan. Known as Devil’s Town, this landscape is home to weird and wonderful red rock formations. The locals believed this to be the result of devils fighting each other, hence it’s fiendish name!

Fun Fact: During a traditional Serbian toast, everyone is supposed to look each other in the eyes and say ‘Ziveli’ before sipping on their drink. Ziveli means Cheers and is one of the most commonly used words in Serbia.

The Serbian Alphabet: There are 25 consonants and 5 vowels making it a total of 30 letters. Standard Serbian can be written using the Cyrillic alphabet as well as the Latin alphabet.

Serbian Culture: The Serbs have been heavily influenced by the Byzantine empire and the Ottoman Empire and traces of that can be found in their art and crafts. They value family ties and are a fan of home-made meals to the extent that they even make their own jam, jellies, pickled food, and even brandy at home!
