  • A socialist party organized a women’s day on February 28, 1909, in New York, USA
  • In 1913, Russian women observed their first International Women’s Day on the last Saturday in February
  • Germany held its first IWD on March 8, 1914. Women won the right to vote in Germany in 1918.
  • After 1917, March 8 became a national holiday in Soviet Russia after women gained suffrage
  • International Women’s Day is adopted by the United Nations in 1975
  • In 2010 the Red Cross drew attention to the hardships faced by displaced women
