Olá! Como vai você?
This is Portuguese for: Hello! How are you?
Did you know that Portuguese is the sixth most spoken language in the world? There are over 240 million people speaking the language around the world. Some might think Portuguese is only spoken in Portugal or Brazil as an official language. However, it is an official language in Mozambique, Equatorial Guinea, Cape Verde, Angola, and a few other countries.
Why learn Portuguese?
Well, if you are an avid traveller, travelling for the summer or for experience, have a passion for learning languages, or looking to build professional connections for your business, then learning Portuguese can be beneficial and rewarding.
Portuguese is one of the romance languages like French and Spanish. If you already know one or more of the other romance languages, then learning Portuguese is easier as these languages have similar vocabulary and grammar. But even if you don’t, learning a new language will be an adventure!
Brazilian Portuguese vs. European Portuguese
There are differences in the Portuguese spoken in Brazil versus European Portuguese. Some of these differences are the accents, grammar, vocabulary, and formal vs. informal speech. There are some obvious differences in the way they spell certain words such as: train – trem vs comboio (Brazilian vs European), ice cream – sorvete vs gelado (Brazilian vs European), and more. People in different countries pronounce Portuguese words differently, too, which means they have unique accents. When you’re speaking the language, this might lead to misunderstandings. Practice and asking questions can clear these up. Culture and history have contributed to the differences in the way Portuguese is spoken in Europe vs Brazil or other countries. These traditions are what makes it exciting to learn new languages.
Learning a new language can also help when you explore a new culture. When travelling, knowing the language of the place you’re visiting will help you communicate easier with the locals, when ordering food at restaurants, when sightseeing and in many more scenarios.
