Change is inevitable in life, but some people are hesitant to accept it when it comes. They feel a certain discomfort that stems from the fact that they’re simply used to the way things are. We can see this at the office and in our own daily lives as well.
Oftentimes, we resist the need to “go with the flow,” but this causes us to miss out on valuable opportunities. It’s better to embrace change rather than deny it. You may feel uncomfortable with the idea of leaving behind so-called conventions, but you will come to realize that accepting change helps you become better. Here are a few tips to help you on the path towards embracing change at work and in life.
1- Know why you are averse to change
Before you can start accepting changes in your life, you need to know why you oppose them in the first place. Is it because you feel more comfortable with how things are? Maybe you find the process of changing cumbersome? Do you have problems with adjusting to new trends or learning new tools?
Whichever the case, it’s important to know the main reason you resist change. Just like you would a disease, you need to figure out where the resistance comes from. Start by asking yourself why you are not willing to adopt a new marketing strategy, use a new platform, or even switch careers.
Try to reflect on your reasons for being averse to change and see if it’s even reasonable to refuse change. That way, you will know exactly what to do on the path towards making change work for you. Moreover, it will also help you muster enough courage to try out new things.
2- Keep an open mind
You wouldn’t have reached this far into your career if you lack values that fill you with vigor. However, these same values could also be keeping you from accepting change.
An example of this is when you value hard work so much that you overlook the things that will make your job easier. These days, you need to automate tasks that take too much time and effort so you can focus on activities that require a great deal of creative energy.
At times, you need to deviate from your principles and open yourself up to new things. You can’t always limit yourself to a bubble and think that things will work themselves out. Be curious and try out new ways that add value to your career. After all, it’s reaching your goals that matter the most. You will need to change your mindset for the better.
3- Assess your connections and your environment
Embracing change isn’t a process you can handle on your own. It’s an experience that requires support coming from the right people. Your desire for change is influenced by the environment you are in and the relationships you have.
If you are working in an office that restricts your creativity and deprives you of learning opportunities, then you are less likely to adopt anything new. On the other hand, being in a workplace that grants you the space to explore new ideas, try out new tools, or learn a new language pushes you to consider change as an inevitable condition.
If you want to embrace change, you will need to be with people who have the same desire for transformation. Whether it’s a colleague or a life coach from organizations like I Am Becoming, you need someone who can help you develop a mindset that’s anchored on change. That way, you won’t feel as though change is a responsibility that you carry by yourself. Make a connection and see why change doesn’t have to be a personal burden for you.
4- Stay committed to your goals
Accepting change does not necessarily mean rethinking your goals in your career and your life. It’s actually a process of changing your speed and your strategy. Your goals are the same, but you adopt a fresh approach towards accomplishing them faster.
It’s important not to lose sight of the finish line. You can take your time adjusting your gears, making modifications, and finding a better route, but your goals should remain.
Keep reminding yourself why you are on this journey in the first place and you are bound to develop new approaches for reaching your objectives.
You can’t stop things from changing, so it’s best that you let a transformation in your life and in your career happen. All you have to do is to be bold enough to accept change. It can get uncomfortable at first, but you will realize why embracing change is worth your while.
